The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was originally developed to toll, lure, or retrieve waterfowl in the early 19th century. In a playful manner, 'to toll', the dog would retrieve a ball or stick close to shore in hopes this would provoke curiosity in the ducks offshore. Once lured within gunshot range, the hunters could take action. Finally, the dogs would retrieve dead or wounded ducks. This breed is the smallest of the retrievers; nonetheless it is strong and agile. The males stand, 18-21 inches and females, 17-20 inches. Inches. The dog's length should be slightly longer than height but should not give the impression of a long back.

"Tolling" is a Middle English word meaning to "lure or decoy game." To the hunter, this means to draw the waterfowl within range by using the playful action of a tolling dog, much as a fox will lure ducks within range. The curiosity of the waterfowl causes them to swim in close to shore to more closely observe the dog.

Originally known as the Little River Duck Dog after the District of Yarmouth County, or as a Yarmouth Toller, the Toller has bred true for generations, and was granted official breed status by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1945, when fifteen were registered. For a number of years Tollers were seldom seen outside of Nova Scotia, but today they are spread all across Canada, and the United States, as well as in Europe and Australia.

Today the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever still remains a fabulous hunting dog but also excels at dog sports such as obedience, agility and being an active family companion.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever came to Baywood through our wonderful 'Emma' who recently passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Exceptional athlete, agility dog and brood bitch Emma's legacy will live on now through her son 'Arrow' and her other offspring.
